Student discount

Students may obtain the student identify card issued by Matkahuolto and the Finnish Railways VR from Matkahuolto's service outlets and those Matkahuolto agents that sell tickets. The card is also available from VR's ticket offices. For the card, you need one passport-style photograph and a Matkahuolto/VR student certificate that you can print or that you can request from a Matkahuolto service outlet.Complete the student certificate form and ask the student office of the institute you are studying at to certify it.

Finnish students who study abroad and receive student financial aid from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (KELA) are required to present, when applying for travel cards, a student ID or certificate issued by the foreign institute of education, a copy of the following KELA payment, and a valid ID.

A new term or semester sticker is required for the student identity card every year. The stickers (€ 8.00) go on sale in August.The autumn term sticker is valid up to the end of the January of the following year, while the semester sticker is valid up until the end of September.The card and sticker can be applied for at any time of the year.
                     
The student discount is for students who are:
                                           
· studying in Finland or Finnish students who study abroad and receive student financial aid from The Social Insurance Institution of Finland
· studying on a full-time basis
· studying for a minimum period of 8 months per year (academic year)
· not receiving any daily allowance or pay for their studies
· not receiving any income from any government position, job or entrepreneurial activities.
 
Students who are not entitled to the student discount are:
 
· students studying in the evenings or on distance-learning or mixed programmes, if classroom education accounts for less than60% of the total
· post-graduates students at universities and those who already have degrees
· students studying abroad and not receiving student financial aid from The Social Insurance Institution of Finland
· those undergoing training under government employment schemes
· private students
· those completing compulsory education under law
· those undergoing apprenticeship training
· those undergoing special training and receiving compensation from the Social Insurance Institution (Kela) or an insurance company other than student grants, excluding those studying at special vocational schools who are entitled to the discount.

Pupils attending the 10 th grade at the comprehensive school are eligible for the student discount.
 
The student discount granted by Matkahuolto is 50% of the single fare based on the kilometre rate adults are charged when the distance travelled is at least 80 km and the ticket is purchased in advance.
