Parcel services for private customers

Damage in transit

A complaint of any reduction in or damage to goods in domestic transportation must be filed with the carrier promptly on receiving the goods if such reduction or damage can be visibly determined; if not, the claim must be made in writing within seven (7) days of receiving. Sundays or other public holidays are not included in said seven-day period (Section 40a of the Road Transport Agreements Act)

The complaint/claim can be filed by either the consignor or consignee. The claim can be made using Matkahuolto’s Claim for damages form. Complete, print and sign the form and take it to your nearest Matkahuolto outlet. The damaged parcel and package must not be disposed of because Matkahuolto will examine them. Take the damaged goods and package to Matkahuolto when filing the claim, or make other arrangements with Matkahuolto for the verification and inspection of the damage.

By giving accurate information you ensure quick and flexible claims processing.

  • Complete all the items on the claims form with care
  • Give your contact details and bank account number clearly
  • Attach the following documents to the application: copy of invoice or any invoice/estimate for repair costs, and any other documents relevant to the case.

If the consignment is insured elsewhere, file the insurance claim with your insurance company.

Matkahuolto claims adjustment policy is based on the Road Transport Agreements Act and the regulations based on the act.

Matkahuolto’s liability is limited as follows:

a) If the consignment is lost or completely destroyed, compensation shall be paid according to the fair market value up to the maximum liability for loss and damage defined in the Road Transport Agreements Act, including the charges collected by Matkahuolto for carriage.

b) If the consignment is reduced or damaged in part, compensation shall be paid according to the fair market value up to the maximum liability for loss and damage defined in the Road Transport Agreements Act relative to the reduced or destroyed portion of the goods. Additionally, the cost of the charges collected by Matkahuolto will be refunded relative to the portion of goods so reduced or destroyed.

If compensation equivalent to the fair value of the goods is paid, ownership of the goods is transferred to Matkahuolto.

If goods that were reported lost and that due compensation was paid for are later found or their whereabouts are determined, Matkahuolto must be promptly informed of this. A report with the police is filed for all lost consignments.
