Packing instructions

Select the right package size

One of the basic things in packing is to select the right transport package in order to minimise potential damage in transit.

The package must be of the right size to ensure that the goods cannot move around inside the package. If necessary, use styrofoam, foam or bubble wrap. Crumpled newspapers are also good fillers.

Fragile consignments

Place sufficiently thick padding (at least 5 cm) at the bottom of the package, then wrap up each item individually in padding, and put them in the centre of the parcel.

Fill the empty space with pieces of styrofoam

or some other filler. Place additional padding on top of the goods before you close up the package. Make sure that the goods cannot move around in the package.

Attach "Fragile" stickers to the sides of the package.

Cartyres

Used car tyres must be packaged properly. Easy-to-use plastic tyre bags are available for packing car tyres. Please note, however, that plastic bags are not enough for aluminium wheel rims that need to be protected with cardboard.
Prams, buggies, strollers and car seats

Fold up the prams/buggies and strollers and protect their textile surfaces with plastic, packing paper, etc. Tape any parts sticking out or parts that come off easily.

Bicycles E5DV0935

Protect the protruding and easily damage parts carefully and wrap the entire bicycle in cardboard. If the bicycle is unpacked, do not lock it. No compensation is paid for damage to an unpacked or incompletely packed bicycle.

Liquids

Put liquids in a sealed container or bottle.
Pack wide-mouthed containers (e.g., berry buckets) in plastic bags. Tape the bag or tie it off so that it is watertight. Pack containers containing liquids in a durable box so that they
cannot move around inside it. Attach arrow
stickers to the package (this way up).
The package must contain filling material
that will absorb the liquid in case the container or bottle should break.

Engines, gearboxes and other machine parts containing oil or fuel

Drain the machine or device before packing it! Always place these items in a suitable wooden, plywood or plastic box. Add filler to the box that will absorb any liquid that may leak from the items. Unpacked machines and devices are not accepted for carriage.

Seal the package with care E5DV1018

Before you close the package, put an address slip inside it showing the contact details (contact person, address, telephone number) of both the consignor and the consignee. This ensures that the consignment will reach its destination if the waybill should be damaged
in transit.

Put everything included in the consignment inside the packaging. Items attached to the side of the package get easily lost in transit.

Do not make formless packages and do not leave anything hanging off of the package.
Seal the package carefully. Use enough tape, string, clasps, bands or other types of fastenings to close the package.

The best way to close the package is using thick tape. The heavier the package, the more tape you should use.

E5DV1026

Attach an address card to the top of the package. Make sure that the package carries
all the necessary labels and markings if it requires special handling.
If your consignment consists of several
parcels, remember to put an address label on all of them.

Checklist for packers

Choose the correct packaging

  • Use packaging of the right size. Avoid leaving empty space around the goods and use additional filler and padding, if necessary.

Several items in the same package

  • When you are placing more than one time in the same package, first pack each item separately. Put the items in the package and place padding between and around them.

Due care

  • Pack each fragile item separately. Attach a "Fragile" sticker to the side of the package.

Liquids

  • When sending bottles or jars containing liquid, make sure the lids are securely closed.

Tape

  • Use packing tape to close the package along the full length of the top seam. Make sure the seams will hold.

Mark

  • Make sure that the package is provided with the necessary labels and markings including any special handling instructions.

Checklist for consignors

  • Fill out the shipping details with care.
  • Give a description of the contents of the package.
  • Remember to fill out all the required information for both the consignor and the consignee.
  • Write the number of parcels, the weight and a description of the goods on the address card.
  • Select the service to be used as well as any additional services (e.g., delivery).
  • Carefully attach the filled out address card to the package. Check that there is an address label on each consignment/parcel.
  • Attach the address card in such a position that the bar code can be read automatically. The label may not be bent and extend over the edge of the package. The bar code is read at several points, allowing you to track and trace the consignment online.
  • Mark all consignments requiring special handling carefully (e.g., glass, ceramics and other easily damaged materials).
  • Check the maximum dimensions and weights of consignments for each service from Matkahuolto?s website.
