Claim for damages

A party wishing to claim compensation for reduction of, or damage to, the goods shall notify the carrier thereof on receipt, provided that such reduction or damage can be determined by an external visual inspection, and if not, by filing a complaint within seven (7) days of receipt of the goods in writing. Sundays and holidays are not included when determining the number of days reserved for this purpose (section 40a of the Road Transport Agreements Act).
To file a written claim, Matkahuolto’s Claims Form can be used. If a separate written complaint is to be made regarding the loss and damage, a copy thereof must be attached to the Claims Form.
Compensation for the reduction of, or damage to, goods can be claimed by the consignee or the consignor, who can agree which of the parties will claim compensation.

To ensure quick and flexible claim processing, follow these instructions!

  • Complete the Claims Form with due care.
  • Indicate your contact details and bank account number clearly.
  • File the Claims Form with the Matkahuolto terminal from which the damaged goods were sent, or to which they were sent.
  • Enclose a copy of the invoice or an invoice for repair or for an estimate of repair cost.
  • Include any separate complaint and other notices and appendices to provide more details.

If a consignment, reported lost and duly indemnified, is found at a later date, or its location is otherwise determined, Matkahuolto must be notified thereof immediately. A crime report is filed for all lost consignments.
If a separate insurance policy has been taken out for the consignment, the claim will be filed with the insurance company involved.
